[May 1] [Original] Dress Up Girls

Title: Dress up Girls
Day/Theme: May 1, 2010 "For my heart is a child"
Series: original
Character/Pairing: Saffron & Saselia
Rating: G

Saffron wasn't the kind of girl who cared much for clothes, or jewelry, or making herself look nice. Presentable, yes, pretty no. She didn't see the point. It didn't make her feel any happier and it didn't make her more effective as a scholar. That was why she told Saselia to pick whatever clothes she liked to take the place of the pale and meager garments of slavery. Anything would do.

Bashir had said that Saselia liked to shop and he hadn't been wrong. The blond girl was all too eager to yank her new acquaintance up and down the town, through the stands and stalls and shops, pulling out pieces of fabric and comparing them to Saffron's dusky skin. "You're such a nice color, almost anything would look good on you."

Saselia trotted her in and out of dressing rooms, hurrying her in and out of shirts and tops and pants and dresses, white and yellow and pink and orange and blue and green, patterned and solid, striped and floral and saraki-flecked, every kind of item Saffron could imagine. She wondered at how a girl with such an interest in clothes could manage to travel so lightly herself. Gradually she came to feel like a doll, being forced into an infinite number of combinations of clothing all for the sake of her mistress' desire to play dress up.

"I don't know how much more I can take," she admitted reluctantly. Saffron didn't want to dampen Saselia's mood, but she was getting tired. It was surprising. This was the first time she had ever gotten tired looking at clothes. After her release from captivity she had never expected to be mentally tired of any kind of freedom or choice ever again, but already she was feeling a certain sort of strain. "Can we finish up, Saselia?"

"Oh!" Saselia looked surprised and slightly sorry. The doll analogy had been pretty on-point. She had been so absorbed in the game of it that she had forgotten to fully consider Saffron's feelings. "I'm sorry! You should've told me sooner, Saffron! I didn't mean to make this into anything troublesome for you."

"Well, it's not really..." She tried to think of the best way to put it. "I enjoyed your enthusiasm, but since it's a subject that doesn't mean too much to me, I'd rather just hurry it along, to tell you the truth."

"Oh, oh. ...So that's how it is! Well, don't worry, Saffron! We don't have to drag our feet here any longer, just tell me what you liked and we'll go with something of that sort straight away!"

That was part of the problem that had started this in the first place. Saffron's mouth tightened as she tried to make a decision. It was the only thing that would solve this dilemma once and for all. "I'd still rather you made the final decision for me, but...something easy to travel in would be best, so what about boots, a hat, gloves, and some kind of combination of a top or tunic and pants?"

"Saffron, you are so practical!" Saselia laughed.

The scholar didn't see quite what was so funny about it. "...Uh...how about something in...pink," she concluded.
