He had lived as an orphan without hope, except the promise that someday he would see her again.

He had lived in a prison full of darkness and blood, and even when he was free of it he still felt entombed. But still he had his thoughts of her to keep him walking.

He had murdered. He had rent flesh from flesh, studied the arts of cutting. He had beaten and broken so many people, so many times. And each time he offered the dead up to her.

Even his own death was no barrier to his search for her; he had killed himself rather than give up.

He had counted to nineteen, nearing her sacred number, but then he had failed.

And now he lies bloody on the stone floor, staring at the thing that was once his body, hanging dead. The man who was to be the twenty-first crouches over him, holding the axe.

And Walter is not ridiculous enough to plead for his life from his victim. It is over; he has lost, and this time there is no returning from death. He is not afraid.

Just as the axe falls, he murmurs, “Mother… I’m coming home.”
