[April 30] [Suikoden II] Bodyguard

Title: Bodyguard

Series: Suikoden II
Character/Pairing: Oulan, etc.
Rating: G
Warning: annoying second-person writing ^^;

Every time you engage in combat, you make a gamble. You bet your life, or at least your body. You bet that you can best your opponent however the situation requires you- to the first blood, incapacitation, death- while incurring an amount of damage that falls within the range of acceptability, whatever level you deem that to be.

It's the same whoever you're fighting or whatever reason you're fighting for. It's only the stakes that change.

The times it gets difficult are when you can't use your full strength. Or when it's someone else's life on the line. Working as a bodyguard, you're used to these kinds of situations. You've got to value the life of your employer over your own, but keep in mind at the same time that you're no use to them dead.

You manage pretty well with Riou, but who can be too surprised at that? For all his enemies, he must have just as many friends and a hundred other protectors, his sister first and foremost, all ready to help him shoulder his burdens. And Riou isn't helpless. He wields those tonfas like an old, well, a young, pro.

You managed just as well with Susan, before, back in Harmonia, but that job had proved disquietingly easy. Susan was never attacked; you never got to learn who might want to even hurt her. In any case, the job ended prematurely, by your accounting or anyone's. You liked Susan, maybe more than you liked a challenge to your abilities. She was like a little sister. She would grow up to be a good person. You'd like to see her again, but you don't know if that's possible.

After Riou, you sign on with Sheena, but it's a temporary job. There's as much flirting as guarding going on during your time with him. Your presence is more of a token thing, to make President Lepant and Madame Eileen feel their roguish son won't endanger himself at any minute while abroad. You feel uncomfortable that you might be somehow coming between your charge and his new fiancee. You know and like them both. When your contract reaches its end, you convince Sheena not to renew it. You're in Harmonia again, not so far from where you started out.

You moved so easily from casual defender of your female classmates to full-fledged professional defender of the weak... You meet some of your former classmates again. Most of them are married. They have children. They have fond memories of you.

It's through one of them that you meet the Counsel member Kirsten Leipzig. She catches your eye, with her looks and her offer. You don't turn her down. You've been dying for another dose of the excitement the war brought you. This will be your biggest job yet. You can't wait to see which way the dice will fall.
