She said things to him that she had never ever said to anyone before. She loved the way he laughed, the way his eyes crinkled when he looked at her, the way his fingers grasped hers.

At night, she placed her head very close to his neck; an uncomfortable fit, but he didn’t wake, and she didn’t sleep. The windows were open, but there was no wind, no moon, no stars, no light. At the faint hint of light, she rose to draw the curtains close; then returned softly to her place.

He woke slowly, and she felt him stir and silently assess his surroundings—her light touch, his hand on her heartbeat, her hand on his face. Why is it so dark, he started to say groggily, but she shushed him, and said before he was fully awake, things she had never said to anyone before.

I love you, I need you, never leave me.

And when he said never, she crossed his heart.
