[April 23] [Suikoden III] Too Much Knowledge
Title: Too Much Knowledge
Day/Theme: April 23, 2010 "I was born too late"
Series: Suikoden III
Character/Pairing: Sasarai
Rating: PG
I was born too late for the First Firebringer War- to remember it, to be personally hurt by it, and certainly to participate in it. So I had to wait for the next one.
Lord Gavelle says that they could've used me, or someone like me, during the First Firebringer War. He didn't fight in it, but his brother did, and he died. The first time he mentioned something like this, I didn't understand why. What did he mean? There were people on the Counsel who were against the war at very different point in the conflict (although their numbers had increased considerably toward the end), so that wasn't it. In any case, I wasn't really against the Second Firebringer War in the beginning. I changed my mind as I became aware of the depths of the treachery set by the Masked Bishop...my brother. I was as guilty as anyone else.
Later it occurred to me what Gavelle was referring to. Although it wasn't purposeful or planned before hand, I had ended up going into the Grasslands and Zexen practically on my own. I had stayed on the small strip of neutral ground- Budehuc Castle. I had met with our enemies, not as a foe, but as a tentative friend, or at least an ally out of pragmatism. In doing so, I came to know them in a way that few others out of the entire Harmonian force ever would. In a way none of the other bishops did.
But I still don't know what Gavelle thought made this so good. I considered it in light of Gavelle's past actions, personality, and reputation, but I only found myself growing more and more confused. He is so much older than me, I must've been born too late to understand the forces that shaped him. Did he think more of us should gain empathy and compassion for our opponents so that we would want to find a solution other than conquering and killing them? Or did he suggest it so we could better exploit their weaknesses to do precisely that?
