[April 22] [Suikoden III] Time is the Cure

Title: Time is the Cure
Day/Theme: April 22, 2010 "You've found the cure for all the world's diseases"
Series: Suikoden III (yes, I'm still working on my 'bridge burning' story...)
Character/Pairing: Forte Ismeiro, Annie, Sev, etc.
Rating: PG

"A break in the case, Doc?"

"Don't joke with me like that," Dr. Ismeiro muttered. He stowed his notes safely away in one of his apron pockets. "I'm getting a handle on the history of this outbreak, so I can assume that it has no trajectory pointing out of Viela at the moment, but I'm not entirely satisfied in regard to where it came from. And it does nothing to help me fight the disease here. I can't even dream of making a massive breakthrough of that caliber."

Sev wrinkled his nose. Forte was an awfully prickly guy.

"There's only one cure to a disease like this. Time."

No one present- Sev or Annie or Nika or Erika- cared to ask whether this meant the doctor considered death to also be a cure of sorts. Death was the enemy of any doctor, but an end was an end. The dead were no longer ill. Forte Ismeiro was definitely a pragmatist. "Are all the medicines brewed as I asked?"

"We've followed all your instructions, Doctor. Sev and I have taken care of all your gear and the mixing up of stuff. Stephen's given it all out on schedule too. I saw him doing it," Annie answered for all of them. She liked that Forte was realistic and gruff. It made it easier for her to resist the temptation to break down in the face of everything that had happened. When those around her were soft, there was a longing to fall into weakness, to ask to be comforted, to live like a child, but strength, likewise, bred strength.

"Good." Forte nodded to indicate his approval. He seemed about ready to move on and see to his patients, but chose instead to stop. He fixed an ironic narrow eye on Annie as he addressed her with an outwardly pointless question. "Do you much care for the mayor of this town?"

"No, not really. Especially not now." Annie thought of how callously Mayor Burnell had cut himself off from all the people he was suppose to, if not serve, at least represent.

"He's a smuggler," Forte deadpanned, a certain smugness asserting itself in his tone.

She completely bought it. It sounded enough in character for Burnell. He did appear to live rather well for a man who didn't do any apparent work. "How'd you find out? Will he get caught now?"

"Just talking around, actually. The smugglers were the link between the disease's stops- from somewhere in the Outlands to here. As for getting caught...I can't say myself, not being much of an associate of official law and order, but the stuff's still on the island. There's a distinct possibility that time will cure Burnell too. The inquisitors just need a tip to get looking in the right direction. They're smart enough to connect the dots."

"Gonna make that your job, Annie?" Sev wondered. He knew she felt strongly about the subject.

"No, I think I'll leave it to you, Dr. Ismeiro. If you don't mind, that is."
