[April 18] [Tales of Rebirth] Home
Title: Home
Day/Theme: April 18, 2010 "Already there was something mysterious and homelike"
Series: Tales of Rebirth
Character/Pairing: Eugene & Mao
Rating: G
Even Eugene couldn't wander forever. It wasn't that he was tired. Or too old. Mao wasn't tired. Mao was far from old. It was something better than that. He was satisfied. And because Eugene was satisfied, Mao was too. That was how it worked. They were a pair.
Eugene needed a home. Mao insisted on it being a "home," because it wasn't like he hadn't had plenty of places he had stayed in the past, places that could be called "houses" or "rooms for rent" or "quarters," but never a place that he would consider a "home." For Mao, a home was easily enough to find. It was anywhere he lived along with Eugene (other friends would do in a pinch, of course, but he had never really lived with any of them).
He wasn't interested in living in Petnadjanka (too noisy) or the capital (too likely to be bothered by old acquaintances), but a tiny, nameless hamlet by the ocean did just fine. He wanted to be somewhere warm. He wasn't old yet. Not yet. But when he was, he didn't want to have to relocate away from a cold place.
Because the place was so small it wasn't like there were any empty houses sitting and awaiting an owner. Eugene asked about the land- did anyone own this parcel? Was it free for the taking? And received the answers he expected. He and Mao, all on their own, started work on the house, and soon enough, their new neighbors joined in to help them. The framework was up in a day. The rest followed soon after.
It wasn't complete until Mao finished a bit of amateur embroidery with the help of Marra, the cow keeper, and Eugene hung it proudly over the door. They had been here just one week and already the crooked red words were true: "Home Sweet Home."
