He remembers Sasori, and thinks he let himself die before Deidara to spite him. He is sure that even now, Sasori is laughing, because Deidara's still living and what happened to his idea of art? So he indulges in every fleeting moment with Konan, to prove that his art wins. 

He knows it's an unhealthy fixation on his deceased teammate, and that he's thinking of him too much for someone who doesn't care. 

He doesn't. (Because they were only teammates and that alone is not enough to justify caring.)

Konan leaves Pein unfailingly frustrated after every time they speak. (After every time she tries to pull him a little bit nearer.)

It'll happen, he says. Be patient, he says. Wait until we've achieved peace, he says.

Maybe, she doesn't want to wait. Maybe she wants someone to comfort her and hold her, right now. The emotions that are never expressed on her blank face come out when she goes to Deidara. 

And she feels.
