That might have been the case. Just maybe, maybe if they looked at it that way. If they changed their point of view – it could be a miserable situation if they were pessimistic. It could be horrible, could be scarring and torment and hopeless.

It was times like this when you wanted to feel sad for them, because that what a good friend does for them -- maybe because they were getting a divorce or their child had died. Maybe because of a funeral, a break-up,

It was times like this, when the world should shatter and fall apart around them, and you’d be their only pillar, their only support beam. It was times like this when your friendship was their grounding grace, their salvation and solace. Times like this when companionship was a must and a guarantee for them not killing themselves, and that you were the only one who stopped them from eating that bullet – from drinking that cyanide tea.

But when it doesn’t happen that way, because sometimes it just won’t, they don’t need you. They can stand on their own two feet, without need to lean on your arms and your legs and your spine.

You’re not needed.

They begin running, they’re prancing, they’ve got wings sprouted from their scapulae and they take off to gorgeous skies of glory and strength.

And they leave you on the ground, in the dirt, with grubby grains of Earthling sand stuck under your fingernails.

They didn’t need your strength to keep them from suicide attempts. No need for personal bodily harm, they got sunshine.

And you’ve got nothing.

It just wasn’t sad enough for them to need a friend, and so, they didn’t tell you they were leaving.
