It was easy, at first.
It still is. And that's why it could never work, they think.
It started with teasing and stolen glances that the other promptly stole back. She grinned at him and he dragged her to the soft carpet of grass and they looked up. Not necessarily at the wisps of white floating above, but they looked together.
It was perfect.
And so it could never be.
They had their moments when they bump into each other on the street, whether in Konoha or Suna, between Kage towers and friends' houses.
Eventually, they realize that they spend more time comforting their own family and friends than spending time with each other.
(They spend all their time trying to fix other people's catastrophic relationships and problems and consequently break and make their own.
The tragic boy and the still-finding-herself girl—they are working it out. The one who almost gave up her life for one who never saw her is alive, still, and they are trying.)
She says it would never work anyway, with him an important Konohan and her brother the Kazekage.
(A lie—she's spent enough time as an ambassador to know the loopholes allowing such a relationship.)
He agrees.
They give in to this stupid reasoning and part with bitter smiles.
[we were never a tragedy and that's the only way it could have worked]
