[APR 2] [Original] Shortcuts
Title: Shortcuts
Day/Theme: Walking on higher ground
Series: Original
Characters/pairing: Josh
Rating: continued from yesterday
It was a long walk to the main road. Josh was wearing his old threadbare tennis shoes and walked on the duty line of grass and dandelions down the middle of the dirt road. It wasn’t as hot as the baked dirt road, and he missed it when he stepped out onto the asphalt of the next road. Thankfully, that stretch was flanked by trees and the pavement was cooler than the road through the open field had been.
True to his word, he mulled over what the Biker had told him. So. Not just the Dog was haunting the bordering house. Something that had sent a hardened battle medic screaming down the stairs. It was probably some testament to Josh's own personal brand of crazy that he was going along with all this.
He wished he had gone to talk to his sister before he had started out. Too late now. He cut across the Locke’s field. It was a steeper climb but cut a half mile off. From the top of the hill, he could see the red tin roof of the roadside stand. He stopped for a moment to let the breeze cool the sweat in his hair and under his shirt.
He had always taken pride in being the shrewd member of his bumpkin family. At his most fanboyish, he had hoped the Biker had thought so too, but he was at least smart enough to know that this was way over his head. His space cadet kid sister had a better grasp of this mess, even if she was going around with red string and salt, and trying to figure out if there were any rowan trees growing around. He started sliding down the far slope. Maybe if he brought her a cherry coke, she would help him out without making him apologize for calling all her faerie tales stupid baby crap. That might be a little much to hope for, but it couldn’t hurt.
