[29 MAR] [PERSONA 3] [MIDNIGHT MEALS AND CANDLELIGHT CONVERSATIONS]

Title: Midnight Meals and Candlelight Conversations
Day/Theme: 29th March 2010; the quiet moments while the city’s still dark
Series: Persona 3
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Yukari, Minato; slightly hinted Minato/Yukari
Rating: G
Notes: Set early in the game. (Also, possibly slightly OOC Minato depending on your take, but since he's pretty much a blank slate, that almost gives anyone free reins with him.)

If there was one thing Yukari hated about the Dark Hour, it was that the damn atmosphere made it almost impossible for her to fall back asleep if she ever woke up in the middle of it. Tonight was, unfortunately for her, one such night. The girl restlessly tossed and turned in her bed while trying to pointedly ignore the sickly light that streamed through the window, but it failed to work. She finally gave up, pushing her blanket aside and sitting up in bed. Sighing morosely to herself, Yukari slipped out of her room and headed for the kitchen. Maybe a glass of water would help.

Much to her surprise, she spotted the dim glow of a candle coming from her desired destination, indicating that someone else was also up and about. "Who's there?" she asked out loud, approaching cautiously. The ball of light shifted, revealing the face of one Arisato Minato.

"Can't sleep?" the appointed leader of S.E.E.S. queried by way of an answer.

Yukari attempted a smile, but it came out more of a grimace. "You too, huh?" she prodded as she made her way to a seat at the counter. The boy nodded absently, his gesture visible due to the candlelight. It was only then that she noticed he had been in the middle of something when she'd made her appearance.

"Midnight snacks?" She blinked. She hadn't expected this of him. Maybe Junpei, but certainly not him.

"Just for the rough nights." He didn't elaborate. "Here, have some." As if by magic, a glass of milk appeared in front of her, accompanied by a plate stacked with cookies and sandwiches. Yukari fidgeted, staring almost longingly at the food. "I don't know... Isn't midnight snacking supposed to be bad for your health or something?" she hedged.

Minato raised an eyebrow at her before deliberately picking up a sandwich at a snail's pace and taking a large bite of it. She lasted for as long as six seconds before she caved and took one for herself. At the first bite, however, her eyes snapped wide open.

"...Wow. These are-" she spoke between mouthfuls, "-seriously good. What did you put in them?" The girl's attempts to take the bread apart and squint at the contents in the sparse lighting were immediately foiled by her dormmate pressing down on her sandwich with a stern-looking finger.

"Trade secret. Ask any more and you won't get another," he warned, half serious and half in jest. She sulked, feeling quite like a petulant child, but decided to press her luck a little. "Come on, Minato-kun. A little hint?"

"It's just a sandwich. You stick stuff between two slices of bread. I mean, I bet even Junpei could..." he trailed off dramatically. "Nevermind, scratch that thought." Yukari fought hard to supress a giggle, and decided to let it slide. For now. Silence descended on them until it was interrupted by her, although this time her voice was much more serious.

"Hey, Minato-kun..." He glanced up from his sandwich, eyeing her curiously as she grabbed a cookie without meeting his gaze. "Do you think we can end all this?" she gestured at the visible effects of the Dark Hour.

"There's a possibility. Why do you ask?"

"It's just..." she faltered, hiding her hesitance by taking a sip of her milk, "we don't really know what we're doing to begin with. The senpais are keeping secrets from us. It's not exactly promising, is it?"

He shrugged in response. "We'll have to deal with it, I guess. We're the only ones who can, after all," he answered somewhat nonchalantly considering the circumstances.

"I wish I could have your confidence, Minato-kun," the girl sighed heavily as she reached for another cookie. However, she felt his hand clamp down on hers, causing her to glance up at him in surprise.

"Yukari." His grip was firm but gentle, and he was staring straight at her with an intensity in his eyes that made her blush. She futilely hoped he couldn't see it. "We'll make it through this. You just have to believe it." After a moment of desperate scrambling for words she finally opened her mouth to respond but was distracted by the sudden brightness of the kitchen.

"Looks like the Dark Hour's over for tonight," he remarked as he released her hand, behaving as if nothing had happened. "We should probably try to go back to sleep, since tomorrow's a school day," he said as he turned to keep the leftovers in the now reactivated fridge. Yukari could only nod numbly at his back, trying to process the fact that for a moment she'd actually wished the Dark Hour had lasted a little longer.

She blamed it on the damn sandwiches.
