It had been a long time since Jesse last saw the ocean. It was Homer's first time, and he and Diamondback spent most of the night on that sand, dancing in the waves. Severen had slunk off into town earlier.

The room Severen had found for them, when he returned, were in Chinatown. One small room above a laundry, run by a little middle-aged woman. She didn't usually rent short term, she'd said, but she'd liked the looks of him. She smiled at Jesse when they walked in, an hour before dawn. And he'd thanked the lady kindly for her hospitality, while Homer clattered noisily up the stairs. He removed his hat, bowed a little as he introduced himself. Was careful about his pleases and thank yous.

As far as Jesse knew, he and his family were the only creatures of their kind in the States. But their kind weren't the only hunters around. Those cracks in the world that society ignored, all sorts of things liked to make a home there. Jesse didn't know what all of them were, nor did he care to. But most of the ones he was aware of were particular about things like territory, and rules. The rule he knew was this: he stayed out of their way, and they'd stay out of his.

The little Chinese lady had smiled a little too wide. The next night, they were out the door at sunset.
