[28 MAR] [BIOSHOCK 2] [THE L-WORD]
Title: The L-word
Day/Theme: 28th March 2010; the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul
Series: BioShock 2
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Eleanor Lamb, Subject Delta, mentions others
Rating: G
Notes: Eleanor-centric. Spoilers for the better part of the game.
The man in the suit, Eleanor knew, was not her biological father, but that did not stop her from recalling the sense of safety that accompanied her fleeting memories of him. She remembered only fragments of her Little Sister days - darkness and the ever-present taste of blood - but there had also been him: her "Daddy", her devoted protector. Yet the one thing that stuck with her the most was his murder. The nightmares had plagued her for years, her sleep consumed by the sight of him putting a gun to his unhelmeted head at Mother's orders, of him falling lifelessly to the ground while she could only watch on in horror. They still came now and then, but these days when she jerked awake from those hellish dreams she could comfort herself with the fact that he was alive now. Alive and looking for her.
At first when the idea of bringing him back had become more possible, she had faltered. Doubt took root in a small corner of her heart and chipped away at her resolve. What if her love for him was nothing more than lingering traces of their Little Sister-Big Daddy bond? What if it was the same for him, when he finally woke up? Mother and Dr. Alexander had done their best to "cure" her, and with help from the woman called Tenenbaum Father would reacquire a large part of his free will... and yet...
But there had been no more time to reconsider. Mother had become more obsessed with her ideology and Eleanor had already set things into motion. When Father had finally come back she had felt an almost physical jolt course through her body; their bond had been restored, and she knew somehow she had regained a part of herself she had lost ten years ago. It was stronger now, perhaps due to the change in her body, so much so that she could see through his eyes and "speak" to him occasionally. It was enough to steel herself against the doubt, if only temporarily. The rest, it seemed, was up to fate.
As her Father traversed the ruins of Rapture in search of her, however, Eleanor found her worries to have been unfounded. He proved himself to not only be intelligent and resourceful - signs he truly was thinking for himself - but also compassionate. She watched him valourously defend the Little Sisters from hoards of Splicers and then rescue them from their affliction before helping them escape into the vents. At one particular moment, she had unintentionally seen his own thoughts, and she had found him thinking of... of her and the short time they had spent together. The girl felt tears well up at the edges of her vision at the wave of sadness that emanated from him. Father cared for her. Father... loved her! The joy she had felt then rivaled only the elation she had experienced at getting him back.
And then, in Pauper's Drop, she had watched him confront Aunt Grace only to spare her life. Father had chosen - of his own free will! - to not kill. The girl knew then that even though the circumstances were dark, even though they had both suffered more than anyone should ever have to in their entire life, she was glad that she had been allowed to meet this kind and wonderful man. She was proud to call him Father, and she truly loved him from the bottom of her heart, artificial bond or not.
The girl named Eleanor Lamb allowed herself a small smile when her mother was not looking. Everything would be alright, because Father would come for her. Together, they would escape to the surface and she would see the sun with her own eyes for the first time with him by her side. And, she swore to herself, that day would only be the first of many.
