When the Marquise said that she found Belleroche more attractive, it was mostly the truth. There were no complications with her Chevalier-- he was a simple-minded idealist, and he was hopelessly in love with her at the moment.

Neither of these applied to the Vicomte de Valmont. They had restricted their relationship to one of language alone. When she was being honest with herself-- which was rare-- she knew that this had opened up a world of misunderstandings between them that she never had with men such as Belleroche. Bodies did not lie.

Yet, in his way, Valmont knew her more intimately than Bellroche could ever dream. Sometimes she wondered if he knew.
