Shindou was happy and content. One of the American players had recommended a place near the hotel that served pretty good ramen. Yashiro went with him to help him order and now they were walking back to the convention hall.

“The players here are stronger than I expected,” Shindou said, trying to keep up with Yashiro on the crowded sidewalk…

“Asshole. Watch where you’re walking Chink or can’t you see out those slanty eyes.” The man laughed, walking away with his friends.

“What did he say?” Shindou asked as he rubbed his shoulder.

“Nothing important,” Yashiro said. “Let’s get back.”

author’s notes:

“Chinatown fiction” is the term generally applied to the body of literary work written in response to the immigration of the Chinese to America during the 1800’s. Of the best, Mark Twain and Brett Harte wrote about the West that they knew and experienced, uniquely portraying the human condition of a time and place.
Unfortunately, less talented writers capitalizing on feelings of fear and bigotry, popularized and established the stereotype of the evil and morally bankrupt “Chinaman” that exists to this day.
