Aaron decided to name the puppy Guinevere. It wasn’t just white, it nearly glowed. It didn’t yap or chew, or even try to play. It was like an old, sad dog in a puppy body and it moved like it could hardly bear to feel its own skin.
Josh was trying to remember when his older brother had acquired the little creature. It hadn’t been there the last time he had walked over to Aaron’s trailer. It hadn’t been there the night Aaron had come to tell them about the sinkhole opening back up. In fact, Josh couldn’t remember ever seeing it at all until after all the weird shit started showing up.
The Biker was seeing a black ghost dog, and his brother had found a white one, and the more Josh looked at it, the more sure he became that there was something unnatural about it too. Creepily, as soon as he thought that, it turned to stare at him.
It didn’t even look at him like a dog, he realized. The little white puppy stared at him like an exiled princess forced to stand on a block at a slave auction. There was defiance and shame and despair and low-simmering wrath. But it followed Aaron around like a shadow, too beautiful to be cute, and no one but Josh seemed to remember that it wasn’t supposed to be there.
