[Dec. 28] [The Road to Underfall] The Sun Will Come Again
Title: The Sun Will Come Again
Day/Theme: Dec. 28, 2009 "these scars are going to fade"
Series: The Road to Underfall
Character/Pairing: Kyot & Thane
Rating: G
Kyot awoke clear-headed and calm for the first time since his arrival in Underfall. He turned his wide brown eyes from the gray stone ceiling to the streaks of yellow sunlight falling across the bed and from there to Thane, slumped over, sleeping in a chair at his side. "Thane?" he sat up and a silky piece of fabric slid over his eyes and down his nose to drop into his lap. "Huh?" Now that he saw what it was, the item became familiar, although that still didn't explain what it was doing lying across his forehead. It was Thane's sunscarf, made by his mother and added to his by his beloved. In the course of Thane's journey from the Granite City to Underfall it had endured its share of jostling and wear, but overall it had hung together fairly well.
Thane's fair lashes flickered and he showed the first signs of wakefulness. Kyot didn't pay as much heed to him now as he ran the soothing piece of fabric through his fingers. Kyot didn't remember his own mother and he had never had a sweetheart. Clearly both of these women loved Thane dearly. He could see why. He was brave and kind and loyal, a friend to owls and dogs and horses, exerting an almost magical pull over those friendly forces that surrounded him.
"Good morning, Kyot," Thane greeted him. He yawned, looking utterly at peace with his surroundings.
Holding the scarf helped Kyot to feel calm as well. He hadn't really noticed Thane awakening, focused as he was on his own drifting clouds of thought. "Good morning, Thane. Were you here all night at my bedside?"
"When Thunderstone showed me how you were suffering here, I couldn't just do nothing. He though that if there were any chance someone could ease your suffering, I would have to be the one to do it." He smiled and Kyot saw how easy it would be to love him just as the others did. "How were your dreams? You didn't appear to be tossing and turning as Thunderstone said you had in the nights before."
"Thane did this?" Kyot thought, "For me?" "My dreams...were okay. They were...safe. I feel better, Thane. Thank you." He handed over the scarf and Thane tied it back around his upper arm.
"I won't forget what you did for me, Kyot. Just as you aided me, I will stay beside you in your time of suffering. Sooner or later, the sun will cause your fears to fade away."
