[Dec. 26] [FFTA2] Oil and Arms
Title: Oil and Arms
Day/Theme: Dec. 26, 2009 "i refuse to believe that love is for the weak"
Series: Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2
Character/Pairing: Luso->Penelo, Vaan
Rating: G
"It's a veritable armory you've got in these bags, Luso," Penelo observed, digging through innumerable gauntlets, casques, and armbands for a simple handkerchief to wipe away the last remnants of bomb oil on her splattered and sticky arms.
"It's mostly been a matter of trial and error, but we've all found that experimenting with different arms and armor helps us to improve and vary our skills. It was Cid who started me doing it- I would've been content to swing the same battered blade everywhere up and down the continent until it either broken or covered in rust, but he showed me what an enormous effect a new sword in my hand could have on my creativity and skill. Just griping the new sword in my hand was enough to inspire me to test a new skill. ...And, well, ever since I've just gone wild, I guess. I've encouraged everyone in the clan to keep what they have, trading it amongst themselves as they see fit, but never selling off even the oldest, most worthless-looking knife without permission."
Her fishing around yielded fruit, although she did nick her finger on a cutpurse's knife. Luso marveled at the precision she drew upon to pinpoint a cure spell so that it neatly mended the torn skin, closing up the cut. He had done a lot of fighting since appearing in Ivalice, but compared to Vaan and Penelo, he was still just a greenhorn. They were real pros, even if Vaan's goofy nature made it difficult to remember that sometimes. The clan was lucky to have their support.
The newly healed skin itched. Penelo put the finger to her lips and sucked away the blood. "That reminds me of some friends back home," she reflected on his clan's practice. She set to work on cleaning away the oil. "But when we were out traveling, it was just the six of us, not a whole clan, so we had to barter away the heaviest items we didn't plan on using again soon. Basch was tough, but he couldn't make him carry everything. ...And Vaan tried to show off sometimes, by lugging around extra helmets, but all he really managed to do was hurt his back. They were old dented ones anyway. Ashe was so annoyed with him." She giggled sweetly at what must've been a pleasant memory. She was so alluring when she was off the battlefield and let her innate gentleness show through. ...Since when did he like nice older sister types so much?
Luso shook his head. He felt guilty just sitting idly off to the side as she struggled to scrub the oil from the tiny grooves in her leather gauntlets, especially if he was going to be watching her so carefully. "Let me help." He armed himself with a scrap of cloth and reached out to take her arm, careful only to touch the gauntlet and none of her smooth, pink skin. If he touched Penelo, it wouldn't be like touching Adelle. Penelo was a warrior and a pirate, but she was also a lady. He was afraid he might embarrass himself by blushing.
"Thank you." She appreciated his efforts. He was still so young and his fingers were small, so he could press the cloth into the detailed tooling of the leather. For the first time he noticed that the design wasn't an ordinary set of lines and dots, but a specialized pattern of flowers and vines. They had probably been specially made for her.
They worked together in silence over the cleaning. When they were done he excused himself quickly. Penelo had kept smiling the whole time, talking idly of her friends back home- the queen of Dalmasca, the emperor of Archadia and his dedicated judge, the sky pirate Balthier and his partner Fran, who had made these gauntlets for her as a birthday gift. When they finished and she was still smiling- smiling for him now, just as she had smiled for her other friends- he couldn't bear her beautiful gaze. To endure love, you had to be strong. Penelo was a veteran, but Luso was not so strong as yet. He would have to draw on every weapon in his armory to learn the necessary skills to deal with that.
Vaan passed Luso running off as he went to meet up with Penelo. It wasn't the first time he had seen a blush like that from a boy leaving Penelo behind. He knew exactly what this was about. "Geez Penelo," he mock-scolded his old friend, "You've gotta go easier on the hearts of these young boys! You're too hot for them to handle!"
"But Luso's so cute! ...Vaan, are you sure you're not jealous?"
