[Dec. 17] [Fullmetal Alchemist] Over the Hill and Away We Go!

Title: Over the Hill and Away We Go!
Day/Theme: Dec. 17, 2009 "something pure and out of my hands"
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist (written just after watching Ep. 33 of Brotherhood)
Character/Pairing: Dr. Marcoh, May, Xiao-Mei
Rating: G

Marcoh had forgotten how easily the young withstood the cold. He had been concerned about May's comfort, wondering if she might need a hat or extra scarf, but now, as they trudged through the heavy layer of snow, May was pressing on at a brisk pace, even where the snowbanks reached past her knees. While he was certainly able to move his old, aching body at a sufficient speed to keep up his her, his resistance to the extreme temperature had been the one he's overestimated. He put his gloved hands into his pockets. Out in the open air the chill was just too strong.

He would've especially liked to have had some method of covering his raw and tender face. May worried for him, concerned that her handiwork had somehow been inadequate, but Marcoh though his age-chilled blood would've frozen at this temperature all the same. It was just his new face was not fully healed, so it stung.

The tiny black and white creature (a panda, Marcoh reminded himself, Xiao-Mei) popped her head out of May's pale green parka and sniffed around. Marcoh had no idea what a panda made of all this snow. It was foreign enough to May, who had already wondered about the presence of some creature called a "yeti" as she looked toward the mountains.

Xiao-Mei ducked back down into the warmth and security of May's many layers, wriggling around like a worm in the soil. "Stop that, Xiao-Mei! It tickles!" the young girl giggled uncontrollably. Marcoh smiled. She was so sweet and innocent. What a harsh world they lived in that such heavy burdens would be placed on her gentle shoulders...

Distracted by her furry charge, May stumbled on a slick patch of ice and tumbled over, giving out a shrill squeak of a scream as she rolled down the slope. "May!" He tripped over his own feet in his haste to rescue her, skidding along behind her but coming too slow to put a stop to her rolling.

"May! May, are you alright?" he rushed to her side. She lay on her back with Xiao-Mei, fur slightly ruffled, at her side. For a moment she stared up at him in daze, but then she blinked, sat up, and began laughing.

"That was so scary! I thought I would become a human avalanche! ...But it was also...so fun!!"

Marcoh's tense worry melted away. He pulled May to her feet and helped a rather indignant Xiao-Mei (she certainly hadn't enjoyed the tumble any) dry off and settle into May's unworn hood. "You're sure you're not hurt?"

"No, I know I'm alright. I feel so warm. My blood is pumping so fast. ...Oh, maybe you should try it, Dr. Marcoh! It would warm you up fast!"

"N-no thank you, May. I think I'll have to pass."
