[December 10][Bleach]Little luxuries
Title: Little luxuries

Note: Spoilers for recent-ish chapters, but likely AU after that.
When Shunsui returns, he is not surprised to discover that Nanao has managed to keep the division in good order – perhaps even more so than it was before he left. He is, however surprised (and grateful) when he discovers her discreet efforts to assist Kiyone and Sentaro in their work and see to it that at least some measure of balance is maintained in the Thirteenth division.
After the retreat from Karakura, there is little time to do things properly, but she tries. Sparing her captain’s efforts is not difficult, since she had assumed responsibility for most of the paperwork in the early days of her service, but she tries here too – a softer voice, a cup of tea, a little less scolding. A quick dash between two orders to hand Kiyone the report she’d finished for them last night, or a moment to oversee a supply transfer.
On certain evenings, she slips into the Fourth division’s quarters to check on Ukitake-taichou. She doesn’t know why. Sometimes Kyoraku-taichou is there, and sometimes he isn’t, too busy with orders to save a moment for his old friend. Sometimes he sits quietly by the bed and listens to the rhythmic sound of machines forcing breath into the other’s ruined lungs.
Sometimes he says nothing. Nanao can’t bring herself to look at him then, because she knows no amount of wine, no sun-warmed tiles on a rooftop, no silk kimono or silly love verse can smooth away the lines of worry on Kyoraku-taichou’s face.
Sometimes, just as she prepares to slip away without a word, he says, ‘Nanao-chan, stay.’
She does, then, joining him in the darkness. Takes his hand and leans quietly into him, to offer comfort and seek her own.
