More of my 'bridge burning' story...

"Are you going to see about the mayor? No one's heard a peep out of him since the bridge went down. ...And that's not to say no one tried." Mareesa and Kiheiji turned the same scornful gaze toward the other end of town. Sasarai was amused by their strong resemblance. It wasn't initially apparent from their physical features but became clear as one examined their mannerisms. They were similar in their casual speech and taut straining in silent concern. They did not give unnecessary voice to their worries, but, with a hawkish gaze, looked off past the horizon and kept their racing thoughts within. Everyday people, Sasarai judged them, who were used to solving problems. They had not expected the government to fail them like this, but even as it did, they did not crumble down defeated. The people were stronger than the government. Stronger than he had given them credit for.

"It just makes sense to try him first. He was the one who reported the outbreak to the governor," Sasarai explained his line of thinking. "If not Mayor Burnell, who do you think would be best to address concerning this matter? Is there a doctor on the island?"

"No, we always brought the doctor from Mirlan over here. I would say Father Ovel, but he's dead," Mareesa answered. Kiheiji looked at his mother, but didn't ask any of the many related questions Sasarai might've expected him to ask- when did it happen, was it the plague, who told you so.

"I'll take you to the mayor's place," the merchant said instead.
