[Dec 2] [Doctor Who] Can Never Get a Break
Title: Can Never Get a Break
Day/Theme: December 2 | if the ground should come alive
Series: Doctor Who
Character/Pairing: Fourth Doctor, Romana I
Rating: G
The Doctor opened the door as soon as the TARDIS materialized, grinning widely as he looked around.
"Ah! Wonderful! The perfect place for a picnic."
"It's a tiny, empty asteroid," Romana pointed out, arms crossed as usual, still standing at the entrance.
"A tiny, empty asteroid with a view," the Doctor corrected. "Just look at that nebula!"
"Yes, very nice. It's sparkly. Can we go back to work now?"
"Is the concept of taking a break truly that foreign to you, Romana?" he asked.
Without bothering to turn to look at her again (he knew perfectly well what kind of expression she had), he took a few more steps forward on the slightly slimy ground. Behind him, Romana let out a very loud, very unconvincing sigh.
"The last time we took a breakā¦"
"I know, I know, it didn't work out so well," he grumbled under his breath. But he was smiling again soon enough, and this time he did turn around to explain his brilliant plan. "That's why I chose this place! An empty asteroid, like you said. No one can bother us here. What could possibly go wrong?"
Of course, the moment he said that, the ground started shaking.
"... wrong choice of words, wasn't it."
"I don't think this is even an asteroid at all, Doctor," Romana said. She still sounded remarkably calm. Almost mocking, he thought, but he had no time to ponder such things when he was too busy trying to run back towards the TARDIS before the whatever-it-was woke up completely.
Romana closed the door behind him and gave him a very, very telling look.
"Can we go back to work now?"
"Oh, come on. Don't tell me you aren't even a little curious. Wouldn't you like to stay around and find out what kind of creature it is? It's clearly alive, so it might just-"
She didn't let him finish. Apparently, she had worked the controls while he was too busy talking, because now the sound of the TARDIS taking off was drowning his words.
"You need to grow a sense of humour."
Either Romana didn't hear, or she was very good at ignoring him.
