[Dec. 1, 2009] [Suikoden III] New Year's Eve
Title: New Year's Eve
Day/Theme: Dec. 1, 2009 "there's no rush for the year to pass"
Series: Suikoden III
Character/Pairing: Sasarai and Dios
Rating: PG
"I'm so happy, just like this," Sasarai sighed. He had managed to escape Ket's inevitable, "Hey, why don't we all have a party celebrating the coming of the new year as a group," parties with the other Counsel members a few hours earlier than usual and from there he had trekked across the icy streets, wet with a slight lace of snow (rare as ever in the capital) to Dios' residence.
Dios had been alone, as was usual since his wife's departure from his home, back to their former dwelling in Beilan, sitting on the couch, drinking black tea and reading by the light of a single candle. Anyone else passing by the house would've thought that no one could be awake inside awaiting the dawning of the new year, but Sasarai knew Dios, so he knew better. He had knocked twice, quickly, but firmly. Dios had recognized his knock and come to the door, surprise mixed with a rush of joy at this unexpected turn of things. There was no one he could've wished to spend New Year's Eve with more (except Kina, he would have to admit, but Kina was another matter all together).
They had embraced, in the manner of men far closer than most- they were embracing like brothers even now as they sat together in the dark on that same couch with that same single candle proving all the light they needed. Dios had offered to make him a cup of tea and Sasarai had accepted.
They leaned against each other in the dark now. The tea was finished and the candle near to flickering out, its wick drowned in off-white wax. When the light went out, neither of them would bother to revive it. Dios was stronger than he looked, Sasarai thought. His arm around his shoulders was thick and firm. Dios was practicing his swordsmanship everyday now, even though he tried to keep it a secret. He didn't want to have to reveal what had caused this sudden change in practice, especially to Sasarai, but Sasarai had a rough idea anyway. It was because of him. He had suffered his fair share of injuries during the war and Dios had felt unable to prevent any of them. It was to protect his commanding officer, his bishop, his friend, that he was going to these efforts. It wasn't the same kind of love as Dios had shared with Kina, but he and Sasarai- they loved one another.
The candlelight sputtered away in one final blaze. The darkness was absolute for several seconds before their eyes adjusted to the change in the light. Outside was brighter than inside, with a half-moon looming over the capital, white and luminous. Sasarai was happy just to sit like this. Just to be held by this strong and steady arm.
Dios was happy just to hold him. Sasarai leaned his head against his shoulder and he knew he was doing something right. It wasn't normal to be like this- two men alone in the dark on New Year's Eve- but nothing was normal anymore. Kina was gone. Sasarai was the new normal.
"What are you wishing for in the new year, sir?"
"I'm not wishing for anything yet. ...Actually, I'm hoping that it holds off in coming for a while longer. ...A long while longer..."
