[Oct. 31] [Grandia III] Magic Lesson
Title: Magic Lesson
Day/Theme: Oct. 31, 2009 "O little sparrows, mind your place!"
Series: Grandia III
Character/Pairing: Yuki, Miranda
Rating: G
Extraneous comment: It was great to write the themes for October and read the stories written for them! Thank you, everyone!
"Where're you going, Miranda?" Yuki asked. He was running around the living room with his goggles on and a tiny model plane in his hands. He swung it up and down in smooth arcs, navigating through imaginary storms and mountain peaks with ease, just like his greatest hero, Sky Captain Schmidt (his second greatest hero was Miranda, but he didn't want to tell her that- she'd get all mushy).
"Just popping off to see Doris at the magic shop. I'm going to pick up a little surprise for you."
"'Kay. See you later." He resumed his happy play without giving her errand much thought. Sometimes a "little surprise" for him could be good- like the model plane kit- and sometimes it could be bad- like medicine. As Yuki saw it, the odds were fifty-fifty. He was only seven years old and his attention span wasn't very long, so he wasn't going to give it much thought.
Miranda wasted no time in picking the item she desired out of Doris' inventory. She had already done some research into magic to decide what would be an appropriate first spell for Yuki. She wanted something simple and offensive to allow him to protect himself in a pinch, so she chose the easiest fire spell, "burn."
Initially, Yuki seemed pleased with the idea of learning magic, but as it turned out, the only thing he had much patience with was tinkering with toy planes. After half an hour of Miranda's explanations and demonstrations that gradually lose their patient coating as they wore on, he was ready to give up completely. Magic was too hard. It was absolutely no fun. "Let's try this one more time," Miranda sighed, rubbing her temples. "You have to concentrate and think about fire, Yuki. It's not that hard. I can do it, Gladys can do it," she struggled to try and think of some other way to approach this task to produce the results she desired.
"Why do I have to learn it?" Yuki whined, swinging his feet and hitting the soles of his shoes against the rungs of the chair he was sitting in while his mother knelt on the floor before him.
"It's for your own good," Miranda insisted, "Being able to start a fire in an instant could help you in so many ways- if you're ever lost or in danger. You can use it to attack an enemy or make a fire for light and warmth or even as a signal."
"I don't need to learn that," Yuki turned up his nose.
"Now, Yuki, you listen to me--!" Miranda fumed. This was going to be a very long afternoon.
