Series: Suikoden III

Forte, Kiht, Nika, and Kiheiji began shifting the furniture around, moving a dresser into the hall and trying to convert some storage crates Kiheiji hauled out of his attic into passable beds. Stephen, Annie, and Sev focused on shifting smaller items out of the way and shooing Sina and Tylo out from underfoot when they disappeared from view of the four engaged in the heaviest lifting. Mareesa tried to make her younger grandchildren sit down with her and listen to a story, but they were incorrigible, with their natural excitement aroused by the upheaval in the house.

"I found a spoon!" Sina yelled, jumping up with this hidden treasure in her hand and running down the stairs in search of her brother.

"Watch out!" Annie frowned with exasperation. How hard was it to stay downstairs out of the way for just fifteen minutes? This was taking longer than it needed to just because they kept getting in the way and even the doctor, the strongest of the bunch, could only manage to hold up a full chest of drawers for so long, so things kept being picked up and put down over and over again.

Sasarai wasn't very strong and found himself just as useless as Mareesa. It was embarrassing, so he excused himself to go out and make his rounds of the island in search of someone he actually could help. He took his nalen from his bag and placed it across his bare head so that it swung down along each side to rest over his shoulders. Just outside he could hear the loud clunking of various pieces of furniture being swung around upstairs in Kiheiji's home, as well as Kiht's colorfully Louvain style of cursing echoing out an open window. In better times, there might be some worry about bothering neighbors, but with things as they stood, it was more likely that they enjoyed hearing that some amount of life still existed nearby than anything.

He proceeded along the empty street, choosing to start off by heading to the general shop, to see if it was still open (it had been the previous day), and then going by the houses he and Forte had not made their way to the previous day. The shop looked dim. Sunlight was shining in through the windows, but he couldn't see anyone inside and the hand-lettered "open" sign had fallen down and lay on the floor. He tried the door knob. It was unlocked, so he went inside.

"Hello? Anyone here?" There was no response. He looked around. The shelves were neat and tidy. The sign seemed to be the only thing out of place, so he picked it back up and placed it in the window. For some reason he smiled, thinking that the shopkeeper had probably only had to run out for some reason to tend to a quick errand or speak with a family member. Was it fun to be shopkeeper and turn around the sign each morning and evening?

"P-priest," came a weak gasp.

Startled, Sasarai whirled around. There was a hand clutching the edge of the counter. There was someone in the house after all. He fought back the frantic beating of his heart and rushed to the counter as the stubborn fingers slipped away from the wood. A girl. The girl he and Forte had seen stocking the shelves the day before. Had she told them her name? If so, he didn't remember it.

He stepped forward to find a way around the counter, but not immediately seeing one in either direction, he haphazardly hopped onto the aged wood and slid over, dropping onto the floor beside her. "Miss!" he shook her shoulder slightly, "Miss, speak to me!"
