[Oct. 20] [Suikoden III] Struggling Together
Title: Struggling Together
Day/Theme: Oct. 20, 2009 "And within every dewdrop a world of struggle"
Series: Suikoden III
Character/Pairing: Chris(/Nash), Yun
Rating: PG
Yun walked with me when I returned to the Grasslands in the winter. My reasons for making the trip were complicated. Officially I was going to visit with Lucia and Hugo in the new Karaya Village and Sana in Chisha to promote peace with our neighbors, but as only Salome knew, I was also going to meet with Nash. It was easier for each of us when we split the trip between us (although he would complain, saying that while it was equidistant from Caleria and Vinay Del Zexay to the middle of the Grasslands, from Crystal Valley it was not, and I would retort that it didn't matter since he wasn't coming from Crystal Valley in all but the rarest of cases).
I really only became aware of Yun when I was alone. Would she approve of my trysts with the spy? It was impossible to say, but I liked to think that if she thought I was doing something terribly wrong she would find some way to give me a sign showing me so.
I was growing tired as the Karayan festivities wore on into the night and so I excused myself and turned to walk away from the blazing central fire back to the chieftain's tent where Lucia had insisted I spend the night sharing in her hospitality. The sounds of laughter and story-telling drifted away from the gathering and echoed empty in my ears. Harder to dismiss were the plaintive notes of a slow guitar duet between Beecham and a younger warrior. I could feel Yun stirring at this- the music of her homeland. She had heard this tune before, or something like it.
"Tell me," I asked, pausing alone in the dark and placing my hand on my heart, all the better to commune with her soul and the True Water Rune.
"A song of love, love for those who have been lost."
Somehow I could feel her informing me without even hearing her voice. We were connected in some strange way I would never have believed in had it not happened to me. She was there in the shadows beside me beyond the firelight's glow. "They've lost very many of their people in these past few years. Luce has lost all her sons."
She had been lost too, but I knew she was speaking of the Karaya, and I knew also that she had been different. This was more about the small daily struggles of life than anything else. Yun wanted me to know I wasn't struggling alone.
