Alma startles her awake, and Lise has her hand on her spear before she shakes off the last vestiges of sleep and remembers- yet again- that she is no longer in the field, that there is nothing and no one within Rolante’s castle that will attack her.

I should be used to this, Lise thinks to herself, apologising to Alma as she gets up properly. She needs to learn to lay aside her spear, to stop startling Alma when she comes in. There is no need- or indeed, place- for a spear when all their efforts should be turned to rebuilding Rolante.

But rebuilding is a longer task than taking down the threats to the world, and Lise finds herself on more than one occasion wishing to be back out there, on Flammie’s back, preparing to take whatever monster appears next down.

Lise excuses herself, stepping outside for just a moment to calm herself. She still has the Wind Drum, part of her whispers, it would take only an instant to take it out and summon Flammie, fly wherever she wished.

But she also has responsibilities, she reminds herself. She cannot afford to leave Rolante alone now, even without threats. Elliot…

A bird flutters down, landing on the railing. It considers her for a moment, then holds out its leg, with message attached. Lise detaches the message, and reads the contents.

She laughs, and shakes her head. “That thief,” she says, holding out a finger to the bird, which only steps on after pressed (for which she doesn’t blame it. Navarre’s not close, after all). “Hasn’t he anything better to do?”

Still, she can’t say that she won’t be looking forward to a visit.
