[Oct. 3] [Original] New Friendships, Old Lovers

Title: New Friendships, Old Lovers
Day/Theme: Oct. 3, 2009 "There are no strangers under cherry blossoms"
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Baruch, Auro, Kiko
Rating: G

Baruch had not traveled nearly as extensively as Auro would have guessed based on his general knowledge of local traditions and landmarks, as well as his skill in knowing how best to get by wherever they went. They prevailed upon some Roduin hospitality that afternoon after stumbling across a traveling caravan's tents pitched on the ruins of an abandoned shrine. Auro had been concerned over how safe it was to approach these people, but Baruch had sounded confident and pointed out the branches of almond blossoms tied to their carts as a good sign. Once again, his judgment had proved spot on.

Kiko, the Roduin leader, had invited them in, explaining that spring was the season of new friendships. He was a handsome man with dark, curly hair and quite possibly his entire life savings oven into the hair and clinking against his person in the form of a homemade chainmail shirt of gold coins. He introduced his three sisters, all as striking as himself, and they set to graciously serving their guests.

One of the sister flirted mercilessly with Auro whenever her brother became too involved in his exchanges with Baruch to see what he was up to. Auro uncomfortably focused on his orange peel tea and roasted pumpkin seeds to the exclusion of all else. He had a hard time interacting with romantically forward women. He was easily intimidated by conversations of this sort. He wasn't much better with shyer women anyway. It was just easier to avoid these confrontations with them.

"Kiko, my friend, how did you know?!" Baruch gushed, slathering a flat piece of sesame bread with a thick orange marmalade. "There is only one food in all this world I love more than marmalade," he declared, caressing the spread with his eyes.

The sisters giggled at the priest's exaggerated enthusiasm while their brother opened up a wooden box from their food supplies. "That's great!" Kiko shared Baruch's good humor. "Marmalade is a real treat. My granny in Nazlo made that stuff last winter."

Auro felt himself beginning to loosen up as the attention fixed itself more firmly on Baruch. His eyes closed as he savored every tang of the marmalade. Kiko returned with a small decorative box, which he then opened, offering a pomegranate red cube dusted with golden sugar to his guest. Auro politely took a piece. It was unfamiliar to him.

Baruch opened his eyes and Kiko held the box in his direction. "Desert Delight!!!" he exclaimed, "The most magnificent food in the world!" He seemed both thrilled and slightly awed. "How did you know?"

"Oh, I just had a feeling," Kiko laughed, passing the entire box to his new acquaintance.
