[Oct. 1] [Suikoden III] Patterns
Title: Patterns
Day/Theme: Oct. 1, 2009 "Today and today also"
Series: Suikoden III (continuing project continues...)
Character/Pairing: Sasarai, Stephen, Nika, Forte, etc.
Rating: PG
They fit six patients into their two makeshift hospital rooms, squeezing Mareesa into Annie's bedroom to open up some space. Dr. Ismeiro spoke with each of his patients regarding their symptoms and wrote up his comments on a small yellow notepad he carried in one pocket of his apron. Sasarai thought it was funny how Forte's apron made him look more medically inclined while Stephen, who wore one of Lelia's aprons while assisting him, looked like he had wandered out of the kitchen. "That's only because of all your preconceived notions about me," Stephen sniffed with a light touch of sarcasm. Forte assured him he looked fine, cautioned him against "screwing around," and yanked him off to assist in checking temperatures and wiping brows.
"So, Stephen's an asset," Nika surmised. It was interesting to see how the circumstances brought out the hidden facets of people, for better or for worse.
"We have more laundry, Nika!" Annie called, shuffling through the hall, hampered by a heavy basket of used clothes and sheets. It felt weird not to call this visitor "miss" or anything, but all three travelers from Crystal Valley had modestly insisted on no one overusing honorifics with them. They seemed humbled in general, and Sasarai almost guilty, as they asked to be treated just like anyone else.
"Yikes! That looks heavy! Let me help!" she hurried to take over and return to her duties as head of all house and hospital washing.
Day in and day out there were plenty of surprises, but some things had settled into a rapid pattern. Sasarai folded his arms and watched as Sina followed Annie and Nika into the yard carrying a sock her sister had dropped. Mareesa edged somberly down the stairs, taking each step one foot at a time for fear of falling. When her gray eyes met Sasarai's he knew that yet another pattern was about to continue. It was the one he wanted most to stop.
"They'll be needing you upstairs. Jenpau- the old whiskered man, you know who I'm talking about, right? -it seems we've lost him."
"Yes...I'll be up immediately." He took his white nalen scarf out of his bag and settled it across his head. He did not have his hat and wore only his plain white robe so he hoped it would do for respectfulness. Once Mareesa was safely downstairs, he hurried up, yanking out his circle emblem from inside his robe. The first death of the day. What an inauspicious start.
