[Sept. 30] [Suikoden III] Morning

Title: Morning
Day/Theme: Sept. 30, 2009 "worn hearts"
Series: Suikoden III (on-going project continues...)
Character/Pairing: Kiheiji, Stephen, Mareesa, Nika
Rating: G

The sun began to creep through the spaces between the curtains, lighting up the quiet kitchen. Kiheiji fumbled with the pots and Stephen picked at his bowl of oatmeal, stirring the raisins around and around the bottom of the bowl. Mareesa came in and eyed her son curiously. "Kiheiji, I don't know what you think you're doing, but I'm willing to bet I could do it better."

"I think you could, Mom," he acquiesced, stepping aside to allow her access to the stove.

"Poor Roland. Losing two mothers in as many days," she sighed. Stephen perked up a little, impressed with how easily she took in the situation and realized what was going on. "What's this?" she lifted the lid off the large pot still sitting on the stove. A rush of steam puffed out.

"More oatmeal, if anyone would like it," Stephen explained.

"Oh, and so what's the matter with you? Don't you like raisins?"

"I like them just fine. I just wanted them to last. You know, not eat all of them off the top right away." He smiled and Kiheiji smiled too, scooping himself a bowl of oatmeal. "It might not be a bad idea to put on some hot water as well. The doctor's the one barely getting any sleep, so he'll be bound to need his tea good and strong."

"Stephen's a lot like you, Mom," Kiheiji chuckled almost despite himself, "He knows what everyone is going to want to eat fifteen minutes before they show up to eat it."

"That comes from feeding others," Mareesa remarked, staying intent on her own task.

A fussy cry jolted all three of them. Nika stalked into the kitchen, peering back over her shoulder in the direction she had come from. "Roland's up," she stated the obvious.

"I think your stockings are on inside out," Stephen tried to tell her as discreetly as possible.

The blond woman looked down and frowned. He was right. "Don't know how I managed that." She sat down and took off her shoes, pulling off each long sock to right them.

"Did you wake up Sasarai?"

Kiheiji put down his spoon and went off to see to Roland.

"Nah, not yet," Nika shrugged, "I figured it wouldn't hurt to let him sleep."

She turned around to face Mareesa, who had readied a bottle as well as some applesauce for Roland. "Don't you worry, Ma'am. We'll be sure to pay you for everything we've eaten while we stayed here before we go."

"Does this mean I'll be tallying up your tab soon, Dear?"

"I think it's hard to tell," Stephen sighed. He was still smiling, but it was empty. He just couldn't get into a joking mood.
