Un-related to my other Suikoden III stories this month.

Oh, divorce! Several notches shy of frowned upon. Settled neatly between illegitimate children and harmless flirting with your sister-in-law. Dios had to wonder what he had done to deserve this. He could understand Kina being angry. He could understand a temporary separation as they tried to sort things out, but a divorce! A real, final, legal end to all this tension and despair. He had never known anyone who was divorced before. She had taken her things and their children and left the house in Crystal Valley bare and empty. They were divorced.

He tried to look on the bright side. But there was no bright side. He had brought shame on himself and his family. Everyone involved in the matter knew he was the one to blame. He had not cheated- but his eyes had wandered. He had applied himself to his work- but at what expense? She said, "You love that Sasarai more than me!" and she was wrong, but not wrong enough. It was easier to show his love for Sasarai. The bishop was so easily pleased and their relationship did not bear all the added complications of sex and children and living together. But she would not give him the chance to explain these things. There had already been too much stress and strain. She simply asked for the divorce. After all that she'd said, Dios could not refuse her.

With divorce came freedom, he told himself. But guilt was a heavier weight than marriage. He had become a slave to circumstance- how could he be free without Kina?

None of his men would joke to him anymore about the other women. He wanted to go see Nika and collapse into a bawling wreck. He needed some comforting and he couldn't go to Sasarai and risk passing on his guilt due to Sasarai's involvement in the matter. Of course, to speak with Nika in the first place, he needed to muster up the initiative to leave the couch. He thought about standing, but nothing happened. Mind was no going to triumph over matter this afternoon. Dios sunk deeper into the couch, leaning back his head. Oh, divorce...
