[Sept 26] [Original] An Understanding (sort of)

Title: An Understanding(sort of)
Day/Theme: 26) she smiles like the knife
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: The Biker, Josh's Mom. (so far from a pairing it's not even funny)
Rating: PG

“I’m glad you agreed to speak with me, Mr. -”

She waited for him supply a last name, but he only raised an eyebrow at her.

“I got the impression that I had very little choice in that regard, Ms. Rivers,” the Biker replied and she bristled. He knew very well she was a Mrs. He knew very well why she was there. His pretense at being polite was just to mock her attempts to be civil with him.
She managed a sharp, cold smile that should’ve drawn blood.

“You’ve made quite an impression on my children, sir,” she said. “You’re all Josh talks about and now I have my underage daughter drawing pictures of you all over her homework.”

“That’s creepy,” he said at once, which was not the reaction she had expected. “Hell knows I’ve got enough voodoo hanging over me right now.”

“What?” she asked in a voice like steel. This was not the way a disreputable man was supposed to act when confronted by the mother of a girl he wasn’t supposed to have anything to do with.

“I said it’s creepy,” he leaned forward to lock eyes with her. “No good’s gonna come of a 12 year old obsessing over some patchwork shut-in cripple.”

“She’s 16,” Ruth said before she could stop herself, taken aback. Having her own opinion thrown back at her by the accused was not what she had prepared for. “And I’m not saying she’s obsessed-”

“But you’re worried. Worried enough to walk up the hill and barge in and shake your finger in my face about it.” He shifted, agitated, and she got the feeling that if he wasn’t paralyzed, he’d be on his feet glaring down at her. Her mouth opened and closed. Wasn‘t it rude somehow to point out what should be accepted quietly? “Something’s up. It‘s not just me, and it‘s not just the girl.”

“I don’t want you to have anything to do with her,” Ruth finally said. He barked out an un-amused laugh, and this time, it was his smile that had a sharp edge.

“I can’t even get down the stairs by myself,” he reminded her. “If this place should ever catch on fire, I’m as good as dead. It takes three people to get me down the front stairs, and I can’t make the corners on that stupid ramp without Josh’s help. I ain’t gonna be lurking around her windows or climbing any trellises. And a well-brought up girl with good intentions won’t be lurking around mine. Do we understand each other, Ms. Rivers?”

She stood up stiffly, wishing he had given her an excuse to slap him. That would’ve been more satisfying. No wonder Josh liked him.

“Perfectly.”
