[September 22] [Haibane Renmei] Light
Title: Light
Day/Theme: September 22/private star systems
Series: Haibane Renmei
Character/Pairing: Rakka/Reki
Rating: G
Word Count: 142
Note: Inspired in a very small way by an Edgar Allen Poe story.
At night, Rakka likes to count the stars. She likes it that they have no number, that there is one more unknowable in the world beyond all the other mysteries.
Some nights she looks at a little constellation spread out like halo dust in a corner of the sky. It makes her think of Reki, and reminds her that Reki isn’t totally lost. When she gazes at it, she remembers Reki’s voice and her arms, her scent of cigarettes and green trees.
She doesn’t know if Reki sees these same stars, outside the wall somewhere. And she doesn’t know if Reki remembers her. But she knows she had the warmth and meaning of Reki with her, and none of Washi’s mysteries can take that away.
Sometimes she falls asleep looking at those stars and thinking of her. She names the constellation “Light.”
