[Sept. 22] [Original] Welcome to the Neighborhood

Title: Welcome to the Neighborhood
Day/Theme: Sept. 22, 2009 "private star systems"
Series: Original (Navigator)
Character/Pairing: Ringo, an alien
Rating: PG

"Not so lonely are you after all, people of Earth," the alien remarked.

Ringo wondered if this were a modest comment or some kind of taunt. "No, we're not. Seems like the neighborhood's getting busier all the time." He wasn't one to take offense. He twitched his nose and smiled. His memories of the alien were a little hazy, but they were pleasant ones. He wanted his experience this time to be of a similar nature.

"It is only because your neighborhood it growing that it appears to be so. What you once thought of as a neighborhood was something more like your own front yard." The alien's intent was clearer now. It spoke calmly and peaceably.

"I like having people like you around. I'm always looking for something around the next horizon," Ringo admitted. He had been about to reach out and offer to shake the alien's hand, but then he realized how silly that was and stuck his gloved hands into the pockets of his jacket. What did aliens know about shaking hands? It wasn't even a universal human gesture. And it wasn't exactly like his friend had regular hands in the sense that a human did. "Of course, a lot of my people don't feel the same way. They would like this to be their own private universe."

"Should you judge them for this? A lot of people of all kinds must feel that way. It's a natural way to feel when you are new to the universe."

"Are you, uh, pardon my asking," the pilot chuckled, "Are you old to the universe?"

"Compared to the universe, I am but a speck of spacedust, but compared to a human I am like your ancient sequoia trees." The alien vibrated as it spoke. The last time they had met, Ringo had pegged this being as more of a "him," but now he didn't feel quite so sure. The feathery whiteness of light trailing from the alien's fingers and the tone of its voice struck him as feminine. Aliens were difficult to classify that way.

"Sequoia, huh?" he mused, "That's not a disrespectful kind of old. That's like the royalty of nature. How do you know about the sequoia, anyway?"

"I have visited Earth and skimmed over the land while the people were sleeping."

"If they'd of seen you, they'd have been surprised," Ringo admitted. This tall, ghostly being held many surprises. "They'd have thought you were a phantom- or maybe an angel.
