[Sept. 21] [Suikoden III] Indications of Episcopal Activity

Title: Indications of Episcopal Activity
Day/Theme: Sept. 21, 2009 "antebellum innocence"
Series: Suikoden III
Character/Pairing: Dios, Asa, Sasarai
Rating: PG

"Where is Bishop Sasarai?" Dios asked Father Asa. The blond priest was minding the front desk of the Temple offices in place of his superior, Bishop T'Rainfellour, while the older man took an early lunch break. Asa had watched over his shoulder as Dios poked around the offices for the last few minutes in search of his employer or, failing that, someone like Nika who could enlighten him as to as his whereabouts. Dios was a smart, predictable type and Asa liked that. He himself was something of a nervous wreck, so he appreciated the presence of colleagues who could be counted on not to ruffle his feathers unexpectedly.

"I believe he's away on a trip. Weren't you informed as part of his staff?"

"No, not a word. Did it come up suddenly? He's usually talking about any vacation he plans to take for at least a week before he actually goes. You know how he gets excited about that kind of thing."

"It must've then. I don't know anything about it." Asa pulled out the episcopal calendar to underscore his point with tangible evidence. Sasarai (and it was clearly Sasarai) had drawn a quivering line through the week that trailed off weakly toward the end in a series of tentative inkblots. The first day said, "Sasarai: vacation," and presumably the long line was intended to extend this notation to all the following day, possibly indefinitely if the open-ended nature of the line was any indication. Sasarai's characteristic rounded scrawl gave a certain whiff of humor to the ambiguous statement.

"Was he ill?" If that were the case, Dios thought he was likely to have heard something about it, but as it was the impetus behind most of Sasarai's more sudden trips to the coast, it was worth asking.

"Not so far as I could tell. Actually, come to think of it, he seemed rather energetic. Like he couldn't wait to carry out some plan of his. Nika went to," Asa reflected thoughtfully. For the most part, Sasarai didn't leave for the span of more than a day or two during peacetime, but since he kept most of his own appointments instead of allowing the main office to organize his schedule, his doings were often something of a mystery to Asa. He kept his own staff and his own council, but he was kind, as well as high-ranking, so few begrudged him this.

"Very unusual," Dios concluded. At least Nika's presence was accounted for now. "Anyway, thank you for your help. I appreciate it."

"Not a problem, Mr. Mikhail," Asa cheerily waved good-bye as Sasarai's chief of staff left the Temple as quickly as he had arrived.

No Sasarai, no Nika, now what? Dios left the Temple grounds to regroup and reorganize his thoughts. He shoved his hands into his pockets and strolled along the streets of the Market District looking at the stands of food and fabrics. He needed some kind of lead if he wanted to find out anything else about Sasarai's whereabouts. If he hadn't left any specifics at the front office it was unlikely that anyone else at the Temple could be of much help to him unless they were willing to let him go into Sasarai's office and paw through his papers for a hint. There was Nash, but he didn't know how to get in touch with him. Sasarai did it by nasel bird, and occasionally through what seemed like the power of sheer coincidence.

Who else might know...? The small epiphany was like lightning crackling through his brain. Father Stephen. He spun right around. The exit that would leave him closest to Riverway was in the opposite direction. It was time to go for a bit of a walk.

While it would've been a faster trip had he borrowed a horse or paid for a carriage, Dios liked walked. It gave him a chance to sort out his thoughts. And with things as they were he had plenty of theories to try and puzzle out. By the time he was over the first bridge and into Riverway proper, he had managed to, if nothing else, simplify the terms of his struggle in his mind. The situation was basically this: Sasarai had gone off on a trip, supposedly for recreational purposes, but actually to accomplish some secret goal, and he hadn't so much as left a note about it for his chief of staff.

The Cathedral of the Rebel Saints, with its colorful facade speckled with murals of the ancient anti-Aronian operatives, rose out of a sea of pale houses and shops like a rainbow arching through the mist. Stephen's long term assignment to the cathedral was a cushy position, Dios thought. He had been stationed in Riverway since graduating from the seminary and his ordination, according to Sasarai. Dios had to wonder if it were also because of Sasarai. He couldn't take too harsh a position on the matter as he himself had greatly benefitted from Sasarai's influence on his career, but if Sasarai had pulled any strings, it was an interesting situation- why keep him a few hours away in Riverway when he could be serving the church in Crystal Valley? It was yet another passion of Sasarai's to which he was naive.
