More work on my long story.

"So what're you gonna do when this is all over?" Sev asked Annie, passing her another one of the doctor's unusually shaped flasks he used to mix his medicines.

She took extra care in drying Dr. Ismeiro's equipment when compared with her handling of her family's dishes. She didn't like the prospect of seeing how he reacted if they were chipped or broken. "Well, first I have to go see Mattie. She's my best friend," Annie explained. "She lives in Mirlan and I wasn't able to go to her birthday party because of the bridge being burned. I have to apologize to her."

"Psh, that's no fun," Sev huffed, clinking dishes together as he washed them in the hot, soapy basin. "I mean, more like, what're you going to do after all this to make yourself feel better? This town is a shell of its former self. Your mom died. You've got to be feeling pretty terrible. You're gonna need to do something to take your mind off of it."

She set the dry item aside and took out another. This wasn't an easy question to answer. "I'm...I don't know yet. You're right though. About all of that."

Suddenly she looked tired. Much more tired than before. Sad and older too. Sev wondered if he had done the right thing by mentioning it to her. He didn't want to cause her anymore pain. "Annie," he mumbled, trying to think of something comforting to say. Of course, because he needed it, nothing was coming to him. Wasn't there something either of his parents or grandparents had said to him at a time like this? Idiot, he chided himself, What kind of man are you if you can't make some kid feel better? Must be too used to Da's tough love or somethin'. He reached out and placed his hand on her arm, smiling despite the conflicting feelings warring within him.

"Thanks Sev," she replied. Just that small gesture was good enough for her. Sev was a little rough around the edges, but he was nice. Annie appreciated the way he never got down or depressed despite the distressing situation on Viela. Sometimes he was scared or nervous, and even frustrated, but never sad. It was encouraging, or at least distracting.

They washed and dried the dishes in relative silence interrupted by small bursts of awkward conversation. "I don't know what to do with these," Annie admitted once all the things but Forte's had been put away.

"Me neither," Sev shrugged, "I guess we gotta go ask the Doc."

"I think I know what I want to do. After all this, I mean."

"What?"

"I'd like to visit your town and eat some pears and chocolate with you."

"You would?" he looked surprised. "Ha ha, I' d like that too."
