Series: Original (Navigator)

"That's a cute pin, Lieutenant," the captain complimented her second-in-command.

She touched her gloved fingers to the thin strip of silvery metal. "Oh, this? Thank you. It was a gift...from a guest of mine." She still hadn't told anyone about her encounter with the strange alien, though she had been batting the idea back and forth since the day he left. She felt uncomfortable keeping a potentially important secret from her colleagues, but it seemed awkward, even suspicious, to have waited to speak of it until after he was gone. And of course it would only grow more awkward the longer she waited. This could leave a black mark on her impeccable record. It was that record that she hoped would allow her to captain a ship of her own someday.

But if she wanted to keep the secret so badly, why was she wearing the translation device openly? Deep down she must want someone to figure her out. Marguerite was tired of the stress of being a complicated person. It was easier to deal with outward complications if inside she remained simple.

The ship began to slow imperceptibly. Priya tapped the status screen on the navigation controls, but it wasn't indicating any sort of problem other than the obvious- the engine was gradually producing less and less energy. In five more minutes they would be creeping along at walking speed, propelled only by the residual force of their earlier motion.

"Uh, Linlei," the navigator prompted the more experienced of the ship's two pilots, "You peeked at the status lately?"

"Yes, I have seen the status," Linlei Ming answered, a bit sharply in the collective opinion of the other crew members who could hear her. Linlei didn't think she should have to fly with a navigator's assistance. She felt she was skilled enough to do it all herself. "Not a novice goof-off like Radcliff," she would've insisted had she been asked.

As much as she disliked Priya's intervention into her work, Linlei did listen to her words. She glanced over at the status display and her thin eyebrows rose at the unexpected change in conditions. "Why is that happening?"

"I don't know," Priya shrugged.

"Captain," Linlei spoke up, her young voice rather shrill and reedy, "We're losing speed every quickly. Someone should get engineering on the line to find out what the problem is."

Marguerite scowled. "Pilot Ming, I recommend you take a more professional tone of voice when speaking to the captain. And remember whose job it is to give the commands around here as well."
