[Sept. 14] [Suikoden III] Against Expectations
Title: Against Expectations
Day/Theme: Sept. 14, 2009 "live by disillusion glow"
Series: Suikoden III
Character/Pairing: Kiheiji, Forte Ismeiro (more of my current project...)
Rating: G
"I'm Kiheiji," he reached out to shake hands with the newcomer. The tall man, dark-skinned with a bushy head of dark brown hair, had just clambered up the rocks of Viela's bumpy shoreline, and with his hair sticking out this way and that, as well as one of his loose outer sleeves caught in the flap of his heavy bag, he looked rather disheveled.
"Forte Ismeiro," the imposing man took Kiheiji's hand and shook it vigorously.
Kiheiji knew that he couldn't expect any miracles- this man was a doctor, not a miracle worker, but he had already seen how little he could do and how little Sasarai could do, and he figured anything a trained physician could do had to be at least a little better.
"Can I help you with your bag?"
"This old thing? I've got a hold of it," Forte laughed, suddenly jerking his sleeve free and tossing the hand holding the straps over his shoulder as though the bulky bag weighed as much as a change purse.
Kiheiji stepped back to give the doctor room to get through the last of the loose rocks and into the town proper. Forte might be well-educated, but he was far from a lightweight. Kiheiji thought, unlikely as the circumstances might be, there was no way he would want to end up on the opposite side from the doctor in a fist fight. He steered his tense mind back to intellectual matters. "So, the letter said you're a specialist in this sort of thing."
"I believe they call me a 'plague chaser,'" Forte smirked. As much as it unnerved people, he enjoyed the notoriety. Harmonia could've benefited from more doctors in general. Zealous specialists like Forte were a rare breed.
Maybe, just maybe, a man like this could be a miracle worker, Kiheji thought. Maybe there was a source of hope aside from the heavens after all. "So, plagues in general, or Ghausu in particular?"
"They all fascinated me, but this fever is the one I've claimed as my own area of interest. You want to talk leprosy or polio or tuberculosis, I know better men for that. You want to talk Linsome Plague, I know a lady." Kiheiji walked just a little ahead of the doctor and off to the side to look back at him while he talked. "You know," Forte began to grin, "I think I really like you, Kiheiji."
"That so?"
