[Sept. 11] [Brendan and the Secret of Kells] Drawing Strength from Illumination

Title: Drawing Strength from Illumination
Day/Theme: Sept. 11, 2009 "tireless hunger in your eyes"
Series: Brendan and the Secret of Kells
Character/Pairing: Brendan, Aidan
Rating: PG

Brother Aidan hadn't exactly been a young man in anyone's estimation when Brendan first met him, but he had seemed so youthful with her boundless energy and optimism that Brendan was somewhat surprised when he began to tire at last after many years of serving the Lord and His people. Brother Aidan was growing old.

Each day Brendan's time was focused on two tasks: continuing the Book of Kells and caring for Brother Aidan in the little stone house they had constructed by the stream. Though Pangur was their only company there, a settlement was not far off and they were visited from time to time by curious people interested in learning the identities of the men who had come from so far away or eager for the word of God. The book Brendan was finishing became known as something of a local curiosity and everyone who came wanted an opportunity to gaze upon its intricate details.

Aidan would lie in bed, propped up with pillows, scribbling idly onto a slate with a piece of chalk, but he could not steady his shaking hand to work on the book any longer. It was Aidan most of all who awaited the completion of each new page with overflowing and joyous anticipation. He drew his strength from Brendan's strength as contained in his beautiful illuminations sprinkled with birds and flowers between the delicate knots and curliques. Brendan had an artist's eye and using the crystal eye to guide him, he forged the most precise, symmetrical patterns awash in vibrant shades of red, green, and gold.

If Brendan showed him a new section in the morning, Aidan found the strength to get up and prepare lunch. If Brendan shoed him the evening, Brother Aidan would become so excited he could barely sleep and would sit up late, petting Pangur Ban and mending their cloaks, which he accomplished more by feel than sight.

Each completed page produced such a strong reaction in Brother Aidan that Brendan worried that he might harm his old friend through over-stimulation, but Aidan was insistent that when Brendan finished something he present it to him quickly. Brother Aidan only laughed, saying that if laying eyes on one of the pages killed him, his soul would certainly go straight to Heaven.
