Chen was a good kid. Everyone said so. He was loyal to the Fire Nation, respectful to his parents and teachers, and refrained from beating up his little brother. In fact, he wasn’t the type of kid who would normally attend a secret dance party. He wasn’t sure he was exactly built well for dancing, either.

But all his friends were going, including some girls. And Chen was starting to notice girls lately, just as his big brother had told him he might. But still, he had his reservations.

“I don't think my parents want me dancing in a cave,” he said to Kuzon.

But later, as he watched Kuzon dance, he thought he understood. You just moved with the drum’s beat, maybe adding in a few flourishes with the strings. Hardly able to stop himself, he moved his hands with the rhythm of the music.

Then Kuzon was dancing with a pretty girl Chen had never seen before, and they were incredible. Everyone just watched them, wide-eyed. Then more people joined in. Chen was finally moving his feet, and his whole body, with the music. And it didn’t matter how he was built; all that really mattered was the beat and following it.

“This is incredible. It's like my inhibitions just disappeared,” he said joyfully.

That was when the whole party was broken up by the headmaster, and Chen’s inhibitions came crashing back. But he knew he wouldn’t forget. Someday he would dance again.

Maybe even with a girl.
