Day/Theme: August 31- someday I'm going to stay, but not today…

And there they were, and there he was, because he was broken all the way through, with nothing left to chain them to. Pain was there, all around him, clearer than the greatest of his fears, but that was nothing he could have chained them to, even if he could have thought through it. It was hard enough to tell that he was there and not simply swallowed up as part of the sparks of battle.
But if he pulled himself together- remembered how to feel beyond the pain, just enough- he could feel himself, and the hand resting on his shoulder; could remember how to turn his head and smile at the person whose hand it was, even if the world was blurred. “Could you… get me a knife?” he asked, as best he could. It was so much more difficult now. He could hardly hear the voice, but he thought it sounded reluctant.
Not much he could do now, though. “Just… one thing,” he said, not sure that this was an answer, but almost sure that this was all he was going to be capable of managing. He gave them a smile- the last genuine smile he could manage. “And… I’m sorry.”
