Shunsui slung a heavy arm around the younger man’s shoulders and shoved a sloshing white sake jug in his face. “Cheers,” he announced, giving Kaien a hard thump on the back as he tipped his head to swallow. “You have proven yourself worthy, young warrior, drink deep and long!”
Ukitake smiled, and the table rattled as Shunsui dropped down and brought his elbows to rest, with an answering grin. Kaien got both hands around the sake jug with a grin that tested the limits of his face.

It was a cold morning, Ukitake reflected, looking out at the snow-laced mountains in the distance.
