There was a child, back then. A quiet sort of child, the type that paid attention to the governess when she talked- or tried to, at least, until something passed by that they simply had to follow.

Even if it was just for an instant, you resented that, those things that could so easily attract their attention. Because no matter how flighty their attention was, you always revelled when you could get it, you always wanted that instant of them knowing that you were there rather than some silly little flying creature that didn’t even have a proper name.

You touched them, and they smiled at you. You smiled back, but frowned when something fluttered past and they turned to watch that instead. You held them, and they leant back against you- until they saw something they wanted to catch, and ducked out of your grasp, leaving you with arms around air.

When you finally caged them, were you satisfied? Their heart was beating just for you. There was no one who would think to take this from you, and yet, your fear- that they would wander far from you-, was still so very near. There can be no other explanation for such a tower, such a jewel.

But there are things such creations cannot keep. You might have learnt this by now. But then, your sight was never so clear.
