Prince Iroh was still a child when his father the Fire Lord taught him to use lightning. It took a week, with Azulon growing more and more frustrated that his prodigy of a son wasn't learning instantly.

"You'll never amount to anything, Iroh!" Azulon kept saying. "Do like I do, channel the fire through your body."

Finally Iroh managed to produce a thin stream of lightning between his hands.

"There, there!" Azulon shouted. "Keep doing it!"

Iroh, relieved, shot lightning toward the wall.

"Excellent," said Azulon, finally approving. "Direct it towards me, now."

"But father--"

"Don't be ridiculous, Iroh. You can't hurt me."

Prince Iroh shot the lightning toward his father, who blocked it effortlessly.

"Do you see that bird?" Azulon asked, pointing toward the battlements of the palace. "Send a bolt there."

"But I'll kill it," Iroh blurted out.

Azulon crossed his arms. "What kind of son have I raised?" he asked.

Reluctantly, Iroh raised his hands and shot a bolt of lightning toward the bird. He tried to aim at the stone it was perched on, so that it would only be startled and fly away, but it didn't work. He hit the hawk and it fell to the ground without a sound.

"Very good!" said Azulon. "You may go now."

Iroh practically ran to the front of the palace, where the bird lay on the ground, but of course it was dead. That night he dreamed of a hawk flying through the sky and calling to its young. And when he awoke, he knew he would never grow up to be the man his father wanted him to be.
