The bushes were dark and prickly too, and there were plenty of bugs. Billy Locain didn't really like having to go under there to get his ball. But his father always told him he was a brave boy, so he crawled underneath the low branches. To his suprise there was someone else there, hiding -- a grown man, crouching as low on the ground as he could.

"Who are you?" Billy asked, forgetting all his mother's warnings about strangers.

"I'm Walter Sullivan," the man replied. "And you're number seven."

Billy squinted at him. He wore a dirty blue coat and looked like he hadn't washed his hair. "Number seven of what?" he asked.

"That's a secret," the man replied with a little smile.

"Why are you hiding under here? You're a grown-up."

"I used to be a little boy just like you," the man replied.

Billy grabbed the ball. "I have to go," he said.

The man was kind of creepy. Maybe he should tell his mother there was a man hiding in the bushes. But then Walter Sullivan grabbed Billy's arm.

"Here's a secret I will tell," he said as Billy struggled. "Mother's coming back."

Billy cried out as he saw the flash of the axe, but it was too late. His last thought was to wonder if his own mother would save him.
