[August 7] [Original] Secrets (I Won't Tell You)
Title: Secrets (I Won't Tell You)
Day/Theme: August 7- seven for a secret never to be told
Series: Original (The Strange and Awkward Mishaps of Dahy, Xephos, and co.)
Character/Pairing: Dahy, Xephos
Rating: G
“Seven,” Xephos said, and Dahy looked up to find him staring out the window with an odd look on his face. At least it wasn’t what he’d been expecting, but it still wasn’t the sort of thing he wanted to hear (seven was so very close to seventh).
“Yes?” he said, because even if he didn’t really want to know, it was in his best interests to work out whether it was something he had to worry about or not.
“There’re seven crows outside,” Xephos said, frowning at them- or at the window, at any rate; Dahy wasn’t quite in a position to tell. “I knew the rhyme- one of them, anyway-, but I can’t quite recall it right now. I don’t suppose you’d happen to know it?” he asked, turning and giving Dahy a rather more perceptive look than Dahy liked.
“Seven means a secret never to be told, as I recall,” he said, going back to his book. It wasn’t anything much that he didn’t already know about various spirits, but there was no harm in refreshing his memory- and correcting things where the authors had been wrong.
“Secrets, is it?” Xephos said, and Dahy’d known the other too long to not know that he was smiling. “Might be a sign of some form or other, then,” and he leaned on the table and into Dahy’s personal space (which was, admittedly, on the larger side).
Dahy sat up a little, so that Xephos was just in his personal space rather than right in. “I think you’re missing the meaning of ‘never to be told’.”
“I like to believe that there’s no secret that doesn’t deserve its day in the sun,” Xephos said, grinning, and Dahy stared. Xephos wasn’t star-bright, but he was fire and that had its own light…
Then again, he reflected, it was just as likely that Xephos was simply doing his best to mess with him, and smiled. “Perhaps so,” he said, as lightly as he dared. “Perhaps you might even like to explain those scars on your chest.”
Xephos’ grin faltered, hand rising as if to cover the area. “I…” He cleared his throat. “I told you that I’d talk about that when I felt the time was right.”
“And it’s not now?” He half-tilted his head, expression turning to mild puzzlement.
“…no, I don’t think so,” Xephos said, hand clenching before he shook himself and starting smiling again. “Besides. You’re the one with all the secrets. You’ve never said what’s under that hair, for instance.” He grinned.
Dahy raised an eyebrow at him. “Well, there’s nothing much to say about it,” he said, tucking the hair that fell over the right side of his face behind his ear anyway. “It’s just what you’d expect, isn’t it?”
Xephos’ expression of disappointment was exactly what he’d wanted, at any rate.
