Douglas smiled as he watched Heather shoot baskets in the park. He had taught her how to handle a basketball, though he thought she was much better at it than an out-of-shape old man like him. Yet she had refused to go out for the school team, probably because there were still times she needed to be away from people. Often Heather seemed to have forgotten Silent Hill even better than Douglas had, but sometimes she would suddenly become quiet and he knew she was thinking of some memory she didn't want to share. Usually she was happy, though, like now.

After one more successful shot, Heather put the ball down on the court and went to sit in the nearby grass. It was almost evening, and she and Douglas were the only people around. After a moment she called to him to come sit with her.

"All right, Heather," he said as he carefully placed himself next to her in the long grass.

"It's been a whole year, and you still forget to call me Cheryl," she said.

He had once thought that name would bring her bad memories too. "Sorry. I'm old and set in my ways."

"If I hear you call yourself old one more time..." she began.

"You'll what?"

Suddenly she pushed him onto his back and straddled him.

"Hey!" she said. "You can't do that! People will--"

"There's no one here," she said with a grin.

Douglas's body was reacting strongly to Heather's closeness and her scent, and that scared him. She was just playing around, he told himself, and didn't realize what this was doing to him. But he knew better.

"Hey now, you're too old to act like a little kid," he said. "Let me up."

"Then I'm old enough for this," Heather said, and kissed him.

For a moment Douglas forgot about her age, and his age, and the people who weren't around to see. Heather had tried kissing him before, and he had had his arguments lined up, but he couldn't seem to remember them right now. Gently, he pushed her away from him and looked up into her eyes.

"You can't just kiss me in the park like this," he said.

"Why not?"

"Because I'm too old to lie around in the grass," he replied weakly.

Heather leaped up and extended a hand to help him stand.

"Take me home then," she said, and added almost silently, "and I'll kiss you on the couch."

"I heard that!" he said, but he couldn't help laughing. If she wasn't going to give up, he knew eventually he would give in. And now, watching the setting sun shine through her hair, that didn't seem like such a bad thing.
