The thing was behind the bars, and James could only stare. It stood, looming, and James was certain it stared at him though he couldn’t see its eyes. He couldn’t even tell if it breathed.
Then for just a moment, he felt it: the weight of the helmet on his own head, the feel of the gloves on his large, scarred hands.
It turned, and lumbered away, with James staring after, still feeling the boots around his own feet and the heavy blood-stained knife dragging behind him.
And he wondered: were the bars shutting him out, or shutting him in?
