There was a reporter in Wish House.

Everyone knew the reporter rules: Stay out of sight unless you were one of the special ones that Mother Dahlia called out for visitors. Vincent always got called out, and they fed him better than the rest and bruised him less.

Walter was never wanted, so he was hiding. But he dared to hide in a closet near the living room where Mother Dahlia was speaking to the man. He could hear everything, all the pretty words she used to describe the place.

"The most important thing we can give to our orphans is love," she was saying.

Dahlia had told him that the only person who loved him was his real mother, which was why it was so important to bring her back. And she certainly never showed love to any of them, not even Vincent.

"We're like a family here, and no one is ever alone."

Had Mother Dahlia forgotten the Water Prison? Walter had been alone there for weeks once. He had barely survived, and he wondered if he had been meant to die there.

"I'll give you the chance to meet one of our children later," said Dahlia. "They're so delicate. I'm always careful about introducing them to strangers."

Vincent, it would always be Vincent. He knew how to smile, and how to pretend Wish House was a lovely place where people should send money and babies. Walter rubbed at his black eye. Andrew the guard had hit him again. What would the reporter think of that?

"Perhaps there's no substitute for a mother's love," Dahlia said, "but we do our best."

Finally she had said something that was true. There was no substitute for a mother, and someday Walter would have his own mother back again. She would really love him, and he wouldn't have to be alone anymore. Then he would laugh at Vincent and all the rest of them.

With a small whimper, Walter curled up in the closet and fell asleep, dreaming of his beautiful mother stretching her arms out to him.

[A.N. I borrowed the idea of Vincent being a Wish House orphan from one of my favorite fic writers. I know it's not canon but it's not impossible.]
